On a rainy Saturday morning (afternoon, but we’re not ashamed to admit sleeping in happens) Jamie and I drove (because rain) over to Union Station and wondered around the Farmer’s Market (Indoor edition). I brought my trusty Pentax K-3 iii and my Ricoh KR-5 (35mm film camera) to take a few pictures since I hadn’t brought my camera out in weeks. Other than a few good, tasty things, the photography “vibe” was zero today. On my Pentax I had an older Sigma 18-200mm autofocus lens. It turned out to be a poor choice for today’s cloudy, dull, inside day because every single picture feels “ugh”. This lens isn’t the greatest and it really fails when you take it inside when it isn’t very well lit. Just “blagh”.
A couple pictures as I wiped the rain off the camera (It is weather resistant, so it doesn’t hurt it to get wet), sent these two pictures off, and instantly knew “today is going to be a challenge”.
I have been trying to trust that newer cameras can handle ISO settings in the “way up high” area. In the cases above, they were both at 6400 I think (maybe the right one was at 5000). I let the camera pick the ISO there. I still feel they are very noisy (grainy in film speak).
Since this Sigma lens doesn’t have a monster wide aperture (f-stop) I had to work with a slow shutter, and high ISO. Two things that show motion blur and noise like nothing else. My other fun lenses are f/2.0 or faster whereas this Sigma lens is f/3.5 so it isn’t “bad”, it just isn’t “good”. A 50mm f/1.2 would be amazing in here but you couldn’t zoom or pull out wide, you would just have 50mm and that’s it.
We didn’t stay long, but it was long enough to be finished being a people person for the day. Tomorrow, we went to the hockey game with an uber shitty camera. Already posted that.
It was a nice day temperature wise, but it was annoyingly drizzly and rainy all day. We really need snow, but this year has been dry and warm for the most part.
I just like this building, no story to go with it really. Just an old apartment across the parking lot from Jamie’s car.
That’s all for today.. I hope you have a great day 🙂
